Brian Moylett is a published author, ex-rugby player and leading expert in stress mitigation, mental focus and wellbeing for athletes.
After years of working with athletes to develop their mental focus, and the impact this has on performance, Brian is increasingly being asked to work with leaders and school pupils to help them apply the same principles to their lives, to optimise their performance on and off the ‘field’, whether that’s rugby or the office.
Brian is an advanced breathing instructor and combines theory-based knowledge with his own personal experiences from playing rugby at an elite level. After a number of injuries ended his professional career, he turned to supporting players to achieve their own potential.
Brian has worked with a number of high-performance athletes, as well as coaching and support staff. He is currently the Head Coach of Shirley Rugby Div 1 and the host of The Brian Moylett Podcast, and has written a book, The Book on How You Become a Pro Rugby Player, a guide to help young rugby players master the mental side of the game.

Here’s your chance to learn more about one of New Zealand’s leading sports mental skills coach
How did the importance of mindset come into play for you?
As a player I had an understanding of high performance, but I discovered the power of mindset after I suffered a shoulder injury in 2016 and fell into a depression. I began my own inward journey, which led me to realising the enormous potential we have within us, and that mindset is the key to unlocking this.
Who has had the greatest influence on your career to date?
My Provincial U20 coach, Nigel Carolan. He understood me, believed in me and allowed me to express myself. He gave me self-confidence as a player but also as a person.
How do you relax?
I am still quite active even though I’m no longer playing rugby – I’m in the gym most days, and I love playing a round of golf when I can fit it in! I’m also a big advocate for sea swims.
What have been some career highlights?
Without a doubt, representing Ireland in rugby. It had been a dream of mine since I was 8 years old. Writing my first book was also a great moment.
Your podcast is listened to in over 100 countries – what do you think makes it so successful?
I think it’s being able to connect with people from all different backgrounds. I try to have a mix of ex-rugby players, and then people from all industries and backgrounds, because I think sharing different perspectives is what keeps this conversation around mental skills and high performance interesting. Sometimes people think this type of work is only relevant for athletes, but that couldn’t be further from the truth – anyone who can tap into their flow state is going to find their work and life are infinitely more rewarding, so it really is something that benefits everyone.
